Understanding the Rabbinic Perspectives on Giyus
Understanding the Rabbinic Perspectives on Giyus
The controversial topic of Giyus is a very significant topic that should be understood in-depth not only in its idealistic but also its more pragmatic aspects within the framework of the Torah and Rabbinic understanding.
Hashem gave the Torah to the entire Nation of Yisrael through Moshe Rabbeinu. All of the Nation of Yisrael was at Sinai and witnessed the Torah being given. The Elders of Yisrael preserved the Torah through their knowledge, wisdom, and understanding of the Torah as it was passed down from generation to generation. The place, where the entire Nation of Yisrael, was commanded to observe the commandments in the Torah was the land that was inhabited by Canaanim who practiced an inhumane form of Avodah Zarah. The Canaanim were living in the land that includes all of Azzah, all of Medinat Yisrael including the disputed territory once owned by Yarden, and the majority of Levanon. This is the land that is destined for the Nation of Yisrael.
The majority of Rabbinic authorities say that living in Eretz Yisrael is one of the 613 Commandments in the Torah. The RambaM said that it is one of the most important commandments in The Torah even though the RambaN disgrees.
The majority of Jewish people, alive today, have visited Eretz Yisrael at least once in their life, and there has been a disproportionately large quantity and quality of Torah that has been proliferated in Eretz Yisrael. In my personal experience, I experienced great spiritual changes each time I had entered Eretz Yisrael and each time I had entered Yerushalayim – the holiest city in Eretz Yisrael.
Preserving the holiness of the Jewish communities in Eretz Yisrael has been something that Jews have been trying to deal with for thousands of years. Since most Observant Jews in Eretz Yisrael are choosing to live in the land that was given to them by Hashem, so dealing with the holiness, while living here, is part of our current spiritual mission that Hashem put us on this world for.
There are different types of Jews in the world. This is also true amongst the Observant Jewish populace. Most of the Orthodox Rabbanim (Rabbis) do not consider the idea of Medinat Yisrael being classified as intrinsically holy. Thus, for many of the Rabbanim contemporary Giyus is not actually a Mitzvah. A small number of Modern-Orthodox Rabbis disagree with this. Some Modern-Orthodox Rabbis claim that it is a Mitzvah to serve in the IDF, but they don’t have a Mesorah Mamash that affirms their opinion. The majority of Orthodox Rabbis do not agree with overreaching policies of Giyus in regards to the secularization of Jewish people. This social issue is actually one of the key factors that still divides Datim Leumim (Modern-Orthodox) from Haredim (Ultra-Orthodox).
In context, the people that identify with the term “Dati Leumi” are people who believe in the integration of Orthodox Jews into mainstream, secular Israeli culture which is not always friendly towards Observant Jews even if they (Religious Jews) are friendly, open-minded, and integrated into Israeli culture. The Datim Leumim are associated with the “Mizrachi” movement which, from what I was told, opposed Giyus Banot even if though they adamantly support Giyus Banim. Now, with many of these Datim being integrated into Secular Israeli society, many have been in support for Banot in the army.
The social attitudes of those, that identify as “Dati Leumi” is different than that are “Hardal” (the combination of Haredi and Dati Leumi) which implies that one preserves his Observance even if he is in the Giyus. Some people that are Dati Leumi or Hardal may prefer the Mechinah – staying in Yeshivah for two years (age 18-20) before joining the army or the program of Hesder – the order of going back and forth from Yeshivah learning and army service. Originally, these people opposed Giyus Banot just like the Datim Leumim. Many of the Datim and Hardalim are associated with the Mechinah.
Rav Meir Kahane could be classified as Hardal. Although, I did not find any information as to what he identified as. R” Kahane was more known for his activism in politics than specifically being the forefront of a Religious Tzionist idealogy. R” Kahane never endorsed Giyus Banot in any of his writings. In fact, I remember reading an excerpt from him on his Yartziat that was a few weeks after the Massacare on Shemini Atzeret 5784 in which R” Kahane clearly opposed Giyus Banot.
A fair amount of the women that are from the Mishpachot of Datim and Hardalim will go into Sherut Leumi (National Service) as a substitute for Giyus. Medinat Yisrael allows for Jewish women to do things that benefit the Jewish community as a substitute for things pertaining to the army.
People that are identified under the term “Haredi” are those who follow what the Elders of the most recent generations have said in regards to dealing with the preservation of holiness in Eretz Yisrael. Almost of the respectful Rabbanim that are Haredim are against the idea of Haredim being involved with Giyus. Many Rabbanim have seen the social decline of Modern-Orthodoxy as seen among the people who are in the social setting associated with Giyus, Mechinah, etc. The high-risk issue is whether or not someone could become a non-Observant Jew if they are engrossed in the Secular or non-Jewish culture via Secular or Non-Jewish institutions. Thus, Haredim accepted the Yeshivah-only option as a substitute for Giyus. The two sub-categories of Haredim are divided between whether or not to accept subsidies from the State at all or accept them provided that there is no interference with the Torah.
Within socio-political discourse during the founding of Medinat Yisrael, there was the establishment of the Religious Status Quo which is where we saw the creation of Religious Exemptions via learning programs such as Mechinah and the Yeshivah-only option. This was done despite the fact that the founding fathers of Medinat Yisrael were not interested in the preservation of Jewish tradition…
Because of the Religious Status Quo, the government did not label these people as draft dodgers unlike those who oppose the army for politically motivated reasons pertaining to Liberalism, Egalitarianism, and Pacifism. These ideals are all promoted by the Israeli Left-Wing…
The socio-political differences on how the Haredim deal with Giyus include inter-coalition pressure which is considered the most peaceful form of opposing the current trend of Giyus. However, some of are more vigilant have protested in public and with violence. The majority of Rabbanim oppose these violent riots.
The Orthodox Jewish people, that are Dati Leumi, Hardal, and Haredi, represent three different ideological tents within Orthodoxy on the issue of Giyus. However, since October 7th (Shemini Atzeret 5784), there has been some discussion on the topic of dealing with Giyus especially when it comes to the fact that the lower percentile of the Yeshivah world is much different than those that are accepted into better Yeshivot. There are some Haredim that are from failing backgrounds where some people are not learning well or even keeping Shabbat, and if they are, they might not be consistent with it. Some of these people are at risk of becoming involved with mind-altering substances. Since Shemini Atzeret of 5784, there have been a fair number of such Haredim that did, in fact, join the Haredi unit that was recently established.
In a different sector of Israeli society, you have the Secular Left-Wing of the Establishment of The State of Israel which have the intent on imposing its secular norms of Jewish people. This is most noticeable in the Supreme Court of The State of Israel where all of the judges are Secular Leftists who are selected by other members of the Judicial System only. The Attorney General (AG) has the final say on almost all government policies due to the unfair system in the State of Israel that has gotten some Israeli politicians to call for Judicial Reform. The current AG of Israel is a Leftist Elitist.
A recent bill has classified those who do/did the Yeshivah-only option as having the status of draft dodgers who can lose government benefits including daycare subsidies. I do not know about the exact detail of the bill, but the goal is to, essentially, punish the working women of Yisrael because of the fact that they are married to people who learned in Yeshivot for Haredim. This punishment has no practical benefit for the Israeli populace. In fact, during the era where you had Mapai – the Israeli Communist Party, you did not have the desire to change the Religous Status Quo. Even when the Likud (Secular Nationalist) replaced them after the Yom Kippur War, you did not see a change in the Religous Status Quo.
The socioeconomic dangers of fully implementing such a policy has cataclysmic affects on the economy. This is because of the number of stable-income jobs that are performed by Observant Jewish women including nursing, billing, and teaching. Nursing and teaching are examples of jobs that will continue to exist before the Geulah – the redemption of the Jewish people.
Also, it is important to note that the economy of Israel is connected to the economies of other countries including the Anglo countries, the countries in the European Union, the countries in the Former Soviet Union, and China.
To remove daycare subsidies from Haredim means that both men and women can not be integrated into the workforce. It means that many Jewish women would consider quitting their jobs in order for to be non-working, stay-at-home mothers via the act of most Jewish women quiting their stable-income jobs which would have drastic affects on the economy of Israel which is connected to the economies so many other countries including all world superpowers.
The worst-case scenario is that the drastic decline in the socioeconomic position amongst Jewish people could lead to a recession that could affect the entire world. Having to replace all of the Jewish women working would lead to the incentive for businesses to recruit Arabs into the workforce as a replacement for Jewish people which would lead to a massive shift in the sociopolitical divisions in Israeli society in which Arabs could establish dominance on Jews within Israeli society…
None of the aforementioned monologue mention the topic of the situation in regards to actual military policy against the enemies of Israel. The whole topic of the Giyus issue is only relevant in regards to National Defense and Warfare. This is where the real game comes into play. Iran is a Shia-Islamist Republic that is bent on getting rid of what Israel as we know it, and while they claim to only be against Tzionism, they support Hamas which is responsible for the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust where over a thousand Jews were murdered on a Jewish holiday. Iran supports Hamas and Shia allies in the Arab world including Hezbollah and the Houthis. They also use Shias in Iraq and Bahrain as a Fifth-Colum against the Sunni leaders. They are also aligned with the Republic of Syria whose dictator is a Non-Devout Shia Muslim.
But how did these Terrorist Organizations become so prevalent in Eretz Yisrael? As I’ve said before, Azzah and Levanon are in Eretz Yisrael, so how could the Yisraelim allow Hamas to take over Azzah and also allow Hezbollah to take over Levanon? The answer is simple. The answer is that the IDF withdrew from Levanon and Azzah over the course of the Early 2000’s CE. This led to the subsequent rise of Hezbollah and Hamas. This was also done at the expense of the Jewish community of Gush Katif which was forced out of their thriving farmlands in Azzah and gave it over the Akum that burned the farms, murdered their own people, and started firing rockets into Israel. Hamas has vowed to exterminate the Jewish people, and they are only relevant because the IDF did not preserve a Jewish presence in that region of Eretz Yisrael.
In 2000 CE, the IDF withdrew from Levanon, and after the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2006, the Shias won an election in Iraq which led to Iran being able to send weapons through Iraq, through Syria, and into Hezbollah-controlled regions of Levanon where they bombed Israel until they accepted a Ceasefire which led to them rebuilding their forces throughout Levanon (controlling most of the country and becoming more powerful than the Lebanese Military).
So how does this bring us back to the current situation regarding Giyus? Because if the IDF claims that it needs more manpower, then what’s it for? These Top Brass Military Personnel did not do the right thing in the past, and now they want us to fight for them on a multi-front war where we did not obliterate our enemies and instead allowed them to conquer regions of Eretz Yisrael at the expense of Jewish lives? It doesn’t seem that these Top Brass Elitists actually care about Military Strength. In fact, most of the Top Brass Generals are not interested in increasing the quantity of people in the army, so who is pushing for increasing the draft for Haredim?
It is the Secular Left-Wing Establishment Elitists who are trying to figure out how to unjustly punish Observant Jews who follow the Religious Status Quo. The Leftists in the Top Brass Military Establishment have collaborated with the Leftists in the Courts and Opposition Parties (against the Likud-dominated alliance with Religious Parties) to bring down the government itself. This led to a sociopolitical division in Israeli society, and the enemies noticed our lack of National Unity. In fact, there was a fair amount of division in Israeli society before the massacre on October 7th…
The enemies of humanity took advantage of a dark time in Israeli history which was started by the coercive Leftists in high positions of power including Corporations and Big Tech companies in Israel which included strikes, protests, riots, and the public defamation of Observant Jewish people. Many people even threatened to refuse to return to the army via being a Reservist which many Israeli veterans are. This was part of the horrendous sociopolitical division caused by the Secular Left in Israel.
So while many Secular Israelis claim that Haredim don’t share their burden by not serving in the army, many of them have considered opposing a Right-Wing stance on the military, and the military that many Secular Tzionists admire never obliterated the enemies of Yisrael. So do they think that we would trust them, now? The answer is clear.
